ZZ Ultra PE laminates utilize the exceptional properties of fibers from the Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) family. Dyneema is an example of UHMWPE fibers, which are known for their exceptional strength and low elongation, as well as their resistance to UV radiation and degradation under bending stress.
Laminate is a composite with UHMWPE fibers at its core, which have a high modulus of elasticity—responsible for maintaining the sail’s shape—and are also the fibers best suited for touring, as it is highly resistant to the harsh conditions in which the sail is used—such as flapping, sail kinks, and UV exposure. This laminate is encased in a thick taffeta that also contains UHMWPE and polyester to improve the taffeta’s adhesion to the laminate. The three lightest ZZ Ultra PE weights consist of woven Ultra PE taffeta on one side and polyester cloth on the other. The three heavier models—495, 575, and 645—have UHMWPE taffeta on both sides.
